Castle merlons are the solid blocks or protrusions located at the top of castle walls, typically used for defense and protection. They are often square or rectangular in shape and have openings called crenels, which allow defenders to shoot arrows or other projectiles at attackers while remaining partially shielded by the merlons. Merlons have been used in castle architecture for centuries, dating back to ancient times when they were made of wood or mud and grass. Today, they are predominantly made of stone or concrete and often feature decorative designs or embellishments.
